How do we decipher SCIENCE?

Science texts contain a litany of facts often clouding the difference between demonstrable or observable knowledge and theoretical scientific ideas. Our physical world is amazingly complex, however, the underlying scientific laws are self-evident, not speculative. When scientists seek to EXPLAIN beyond the observable realm, theoretical science is invoked.

Modern science seeks only answers from a natural, not a supernatural source. Any scientific theory or “explanation” about first causes, cosmogony, origin or formulation of life, or non-observable phenomenon is constrained to the natural realm. If you believe that “God created…,” your belief is outside of a naturalistic, material-based science.

At it’s core, or due to what is called the “NATURE OF SCIENCE,” scientific theories about first causes will conflict with your belief and rightly so. Science will not invoke a deity. However, the unknown causes, such as unseen multiverses, alien intelligence, or ancestral evolutionary trees, may take on a god-like role until replaced by a better answer. Just as anyone can err, so too can science. Science is a human endeavor.

How do I speak to an ATHEIST?

No matter what an atheist believes, they cannot deny your personal experience or testimony. This is especially good to keep in mind when dealing with “deeply-ingrained” scientific-minded individuals. If these individuals have accepted the big idea that life and complexity can arise spontaneously, without a designer; then, the “imaginations of their hearts” can easily accept the many simple fallacies that accompany other scientific ideas about origins.

Scientific evidence for design abounds in every aspect of nature, such as DNA and epigenetics – what we call irreducible complexity. Parts of DNA or RNA, cells, or organs, without their other parts, have no function or purpose, nor can they “survive.” Even the complexity of single-celled organisms or of photosynthetic processes is so advanced that most scientists who deal with origins or astrobiology believe Earth’s timescales are insufficient to explain life.

When we consider the philosophical or scientific arguments presented by Paley’s Watch, Pascal’s Wager, the Goldilocks or Copernican principles, the Laws of Biogenesis or Thermodynamics, the practical reasons for belief outweigh any theories that life, nature, or the cosmos resulted from mere chaos, without design or God-given physical laws, or that it grew out of “nothing.” As we all know, nothing has very little weight.

How do I address Biblical inspiration?

In my experience, the best answer is from Robert Jastrow, a Nobel-prize winning scientist, who tells the story about a: “scientist who scaled the mountain of ignorance… about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.” This mountain represents piles of revised scientific theories and ideas that converge to reveal, “It must be by Design” and by the Word of God as recorded in the Holy Scriptures.
